POP3 Download

This configuration is slightly different than POP3 Server and they should not be confused with each other. In POP3 Server you actually configure the POP3 Server on MailNow! where email clients connect to MailNow! to download their mails using POP3 whereas in POP3 Download you configure MailNow! to connect to other POP3 Servers to download emails.

This is useful for users to download their personal mails (Ex: gmail or hotmail). These settings here can also be configured under every individual user settings. For more information please see POP3 Downloads under user settings Click Here.

To configure these settings, first field we can configure the maximum number of concurrent downloads that mailNow! will initiate. By default it is set to zero which indicates that MailNow! will automatically set the number to 10 (if there are 10 more less POP3 accounts to download). If there are more than 100 POP3 accounts, MailNow! will create one thread per 10 accounts (i.e. if there are 200 accounts then 20 accounts will be downloaded concurrently).

-Connection retry is the number of times that MailNow! will try to connect to POP3 Server before giving up.

-Retry time is the time in seconds that MailNow! will wait until reconnects again should any error occur.

-Time out also measured in seconds, is the time that mailNow! will wait for inactive connection before terminating the connection.

-Fields to parse is a feature that is used with conjunction with the settings under the user POP3 setting

-Parse messages' headers to get the recipients address.

In other words this feature is used with Virtual POP3 to parse the message header to determine the correct recipients.

-Number of messages per download which indicates the number of mails that are downloaded by MailNow and if it is set to zero it will download all the mails during that particular connection.

It is important for some mail servers that you don’t download all the mails at one time. The reason is if the connection to that server is slow and you try to download all the mails and connection terminates unexpectedly, the mails will not be removed from the server as deletion command is only issued when the all mails are successfully downloaded. So in avoid such problem, it is advised to set the number messages downloaded in each download to a small value, like 5 or 6.

-Message ID duplicate check which should be turned on especially during POP3 download.  The function of this option is that during one particular connection to a POP3 server MailNow! will remember the IDs that have been downloaded from a certain POP3 account, so if it encounters another mail with same message ID the MailNow! will consider that mail as a duplicate and it will drop that particular mail.

It is important to use this setting for virtual POP3 Downloads because if a mail is delivered to few users in your company, it is possible that multiple of copies of the mail will be sent to a virtual POP3 account. So for example if an email is sent to 3 people it is possible that you have 3 copies of that email in your virtual POP3 account. So when MailNow! downloads the first email, it will look into the header of mail and it will deliver email to 3 users. So when it sees the mail for the second time it will parse the header and will send it to the 3 accounts. Same goes for the 3rd mail. So as a result each recipient will receive the same mail 3 times. But with duplicate check option set, it will only download the first mail and deliver to users and 2nd and 3rd mail will be detected and will be dropped.
